Overview

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, also known as UMass Amherst or UMass, is the only public land-grant university in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is located in Amherst, Massachusetts. Founded in 1863, it was the first campus established in the University of Massachusetts system as an agricultural college. It is also the largest and flagship campus. Along with four other colleges from the Pioneer Valley, it is a part of the five colleges consortium: Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Hampshire College. The university is one of the R1: Doctoral Universities, which means that its research has a high level of activity.

 

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a premier research university with over 28,000 students from 85 countries and 49 states. The university has ten schools and colleges that offer over 100 undergraduate majors, 78 master’s programmes, and 48 doctoral programmes. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degree programmes, as well as professional certificate programmes. Business, nursing, and education are among the most important. There are approximately 20 courses divided into various departments. The university provides the best campus food in the country, which is a huge plus for students staying on campus. There are over 200 student organisations where students can pursue interests apart from academics.

 

The university is divided into five campuses: the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Massachusetts Boston, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the Massachusetts Medical School. The Amherst campus is known as the first of the five. This campus also houses New England’s largest state library. The faculty at the university includes Pulitzer award-winning journalist Madeleine Blais, Nobel Laureate Craig Mello from medical school, who won the 2006 award for medicine, novelist and National Book Award finalist Andre Dubus III, and former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes.

 

Ed Christie, an art director, Billy Taylor, a well-known musician, Yaduvir Wadiya, the 27th King of Mysore, Paul Harding, an author and musician, Cynthia E. Rosenzweig, a senior scientist at NASA, and Catherine Coleman (Astronaut) are just a few of the notable alumni of the university.
