Overview
Budapest Metropolitan University is the biggest private University in Hungary with a student community of 8,000. We offer a wide selection of bachelor and master degree programs in the fields of communication, business, tourism and arts. As the Budapest College of Communication and Business (Hungarian: Budapesti Kommunikációs és Üzleti Főiskola), it had offered regular and correspondence BA courses in business communication, international communication, a joint degree in communication (journalism) and European public service and business administration between 2001 and 2005. The university was accredited as an adult education institute, as well, in 2003. It has started the training of television journalists in partnership with the Hungarian Public Television. It has its own language department, which functions as an official EURO, ITK-Origo and TOEIC language exam centre and offers regular, business and special language courses. The Trade Academy of BKF offers special courses at intermediate and advanced level. The students can master the tricks of their chosen professions in study groups of 12-18 in the school’s campus, which is located in a suburb of Budapest.
History
Budapest Metropolitan University of Applied Sciences had its first graduation ceremony on February 26, 2005, when the school bid farewell in style to the first students of business communication who graduated in January 2005. Since 2005, MET has implemented the Bologna process, and transformed the study programmes by the new Hungarian accreditation requirements. The current, running BA and BSc programmes are communication and media studies, business and management, international business, trade and marketing, tourism, public service.
In 2009, MET integrated the “Heller Farkas” College of Tourism, and established an Institute of Visual Arts with BA programmes in photography, graphics, media design, cameraman, film and media studies – these programmes started in 2010. Besides the main campus, in 2010 the Rózsa Street campus opened its gates for art, tourism and catering students.

Fees & Scholarship
METU ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP
Three students with the highest adjusted credit index in the previous active semester are eligible for the METU Academic Scholarship, from each class of each faculty. In the case of a tie, the higher adjusted credit index for the whole study period, in case of equal results, the credit-weighted average has to be taken into account. Results are automatically calculated by the University in the beginning of each semester. The awarded students receive a personal message about the details.
The scholarship equals to 33% of the tuition fee in effect in the study programme of the awarded student in the relevant semester. The amount is transferred back to the Student’s account in one instalment.

- the number of semesters shall not exceed the recommended number of semesters in the given programme.
PUBLIC LIFE SCHOLARSHIP
Those students who are actively participating in the University’s public life, contributing and develop the METU’s community, can apply for the Public life Scholarship every semester.
Conditions of application:
• Active student status
• Participation in the full-time training program
• At least 2.5 weighted grade point average during the last active semester
• At least a 1500-character text document, which includes the activities and achievements carried out during the referenced period
•If the student indicates in the application an out of position activity, he/she needs to detail that activity in a 500 character long text
During the selection process, the student’s results/progress will be considered based on the last active semester.
SCIENTIFIC AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scientific and professional scholarships may be granted to a student who has carried out activities beyond the curriculum requirements during the last term.

SPORT SCHOLARSHIP
Sport scholarship may be granted for a student who besides her/his studies performs outstanding sports activities during the last six months of the active study period.
Applicants are given scores based on their sport results. The first seven applicants in the ranking list can be granted the sports scholarship. In the case of a tie, the higher adjusted credit index makes the student eligible for the scholarship.

MNB SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE
In case the Central Bank of Hungary launch the scholarship at the given semester, students can apply.
In accordance with Clause a) of paragraph (3) of Article 170 of Act CXXXIX of 2013 on the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, MNB’s revenues from fines may be used for promoting and supporting the training of specialists in economics and finances.
The MNB Scholarship of Excellence may be granted to 20 students participating in bachelor programs and 1 student pursuing his/her studies at a master program.
Programs eligible for funding:
- a) Bachelor programs: Business Administration and Management, International Business Economics, Finance and Accounting
- b) Master program: Management and Leadership
Conditions of application:
To be considered as eligible the applicant
- a) shall be a full-time student with an active student status pursuing his/her studies at any of the following state-funded or fee-paying programs of Budapest Metropolitan University: Business Administration and Management BA, International Business Economics BA, Finance and Accounting BA or Management and Leadership MA;
- b) has registered for at least two semesters of any of the above bachelor or master programs and has earned a minimum of 54 credits within the last two active semesters;
- c) has earned a minimum of 90% of the total number of credits specified in the recommended curriculum of the relevant program, calculated on a pro-rata basis; and
- d) his/her credit-weighted grade point average gained during the previous two completed consecutive active terms is at least 4.00 and who have also performed scientific or other professional activities in the past two terms.
Evaluation criteria
When evaluating the applications, the committee appointed by the University considers the following activities of the applicants: academic performance accounting for 70%, scientific activities accounting for 20% (publications, papers submitted to the Conference of Students’ Research Societies, participation in international and national competitions, activities performed within colleges for advanced studies), public or community activities accounting for 10%.
In case students’ student status is terminated or suspended, the scholarship shall also be terminated.
Documents to be completed and attached to the application:
- Application form
- Documents certifying the student’s scientific activities (publications, papers submitted to the Conference of Students’ Research Societies, participation in international and national competitions, activities performed within colleges for advanced studies) and further documents and certificates that the applicant wishes to be considered in the evaluation procedure.
- A statement by the student in which he/she expresses his/her consent to be bound by all the terms and conditions specified in the call for application, in particular, the provisions relating to the termination of the scholarship previously awarded.
- A statement by the student in which he/she authorizes the members of the evaluation committee, the representatives of MNB and the persons responsible for the administration of the application to process his/her personal details recorded in his/her application.
- A statement by the student in which he/she approves of his/her personal details (in particular his/her name and program) to be used by the University and MNB in their communication in case the student is awarded the scholarship.
NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
In case the Rector of the University offer the scholarship at the given semester, students can apply.
Students participating in full-time bachelor’s or master’s programmes, who have signed in for at least two semesters – during their current or previous studies –, furthermore, who have earned at least 55 credit points are eligible for National Higher Education Scholarship.
Starting from their third semester, students with active student status may receive national higher education scholarships if
- a) in the course of the previous two semesters, they have achieved an adjusted credit index exceeding 4.5and
- b) they perform outstanding scientific or other professional work. Students must attach the relevant documents certifying their scientific/professional results to the request.
The national higher education scholarship may be awarded for one academic year (10 months). The amount of the scholarship is 40.000.- HUF/month.

Dormitory & Accommodation:
Accommodation will make up the most significant percentage of your total monthly budget as a student living in Budapest. You will need an amount of approximately € 200-500 to cover your monthly accommodation costs.
The amount you’ll need will depend on the type of accommodation you choose:
- Dormitories and student hostels cost about € 270-440,
- or you can rent a private apartment for about € 500-600.
The living costs in Budapest are about another 150-250 EUR/months. This sum includes grocery, food, personal hygiene, local transport, telephone bills, and other expenses apart from the tuition fee and housing.
New students first arriving to live in Hungary usually prefer to live in a dormitory, as this is the most convenient and affordable option. In addition, it is also a great opportunity to make friends with other international students!

FAQ’s
- Do I need a residence permit?
Yes, all FULL-TIME students studying at Budapest Metropolitan University must apply for andhave a residence permit. (Except EU/EEA nationals, they need to apply for a registration card.) Students coming from a region that requires a visa upon entering Hungary must collect their residence permit within 30 days of their arrival. Students coming from visa free country must start the residence permit process on the EnterHungary website within their first 90 days of their stay in Hungary. Student coming from an EU/EEA member state must start the registration card process on the EnterHungary website within their first 90 days of their stay in Hungary.
- How do I get a residence permit/registration card? Please note that the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing forwards all residence permit cards to the Budapest Metropolitan University. In case the card is prepared and sent to the University by the time you would enroll in your program, our colleagues will hand the card over to you at the time of enrollment. If your residence permit is ready only after the enrollment date, the Student Information Centre will notify you regarding the handover in a Neptun message. Keep in mind that the Student Information Centre’s office only handles the handover of the card, all other matters should be discussed with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing directly. If you are an upper-semester student, please note that resident permit card will get forwarded to the University and the Student Information Centre will notify you regarding the handover in a Neptun message. If you are an EU/EEA citizen, after submitting your registration card application on the Enter Hungary website, upon approval you will have the card posted to your temporary Hungarian address by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing. - How do I renew my residence permit? Your first residence permit usually expires after one year (the registration card for EEA nationals does not expire but must be returned before leaving Hungary). When you apply for renewal online, you must submit the below mentioned documents again. Do not forget that you must start the process of renewal of your residence permit 30 days before the expiration date. Procedure fee: 23 000 HUF (if you apply through the EnterHungary website) If you miss the expiration date you should write an excuse letter. Accepted excuses could be the following: • Exam – in this case you must provide a certificate from the university • Foreign travel – in this case you must show your passport • Illness – in this case you must provide an MD’s certificate 4. Reporting changes Should any changes happen to your address, you have 3 days to report them to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing via the EnterHungary website AND to the Student Information Center. The confirmation will arrive through the same website and the process is free of charge.
