History
Established by Pope Paul III in November 1548, Studiorum Universities in Messina has a rich history intertwined with the city’s cultural and teaching traditions dating back to the 13th century. Hindered by disputes with the Jesuits, the Athenaeum officially commenced its activities in 1596, only to face closure in 1678 due to anti-Spanish insurrection. Reopened and reclassified in 1885, the university faced challenges, including the earthquake of 1908, which claimed the lives of lecturers and damaged facilities. Despite debates about its usefulness, the university rebounded, reopening faculties and proving its dynamism in the early 20th century, eventually overcoming challenges and contributing significantly to cultural events and academic advancements.
