History
Sapienza University, founded in 1303, traces its remarkable history through centuries of evolution. Established by Pope Boniface VIII as Stadium Urbis in 1303, it gradually gained prestige, relocating to the Sant’Eustachio district in 1431. Over time, it expanded its academic offerings, notably under Pope Leo X in the 16th century, embracing diverse disciplines. In 1660, it moved to Corso Rinascimento and adopted the name Sapienza. The university changed the Risorgimento, endured the challenges of two World Wars, and witnessed the Fascist regime’s impact. Post-World War II, it experienced reconstruction, political shifts in the ’60s and ’70s, and a period of activism. The 21st century brought reforms, with Sapienza now standing as a global academic powerhouse, consistently ranking high internationally.
