Overview

Denver, Colorado is home to the public research university known as the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) and it belongs to the University of Colorado system. In September 1883, in the Old Main building on the Boulder campus, the University of Colorado established the Department of Medicine and Surgery while in 1898, the Nursing Department was established. The School of Medicine merged with the Denver and Gross Medical College in 1911 to create a bigger institution with a more extensive curriculum, paving the way for the institution’s long-term relocation to Denver. The School of Medicine relocated to its current campus at Ninth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver in 1925.

The Department of Correspondence and Extension of the University of Colorado was founded in 1912, and its Extension Center served as the foundation for the University of Colorado Denver. The state constitution was amended by lawmakers on January 11, 1973, following the governor’s proclamation, creating new CU campuses and renaming the University of Colorado—Denver Center as the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver). The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC), which houses the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver, was constructed by the State of Colorado between 1973 and 1976 on a 127-acre downtown campus. Later, additional buildings were added that reached the heart of the city.

The university offers professional, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral, degrees. Both undergraduate and graduate courses are offered at CU Denver, and almost 32% of enrolled students are graduates. The campus is close to the Pepsi Center, Elitch Gardens, Colorado Convention Center, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Larimer Square, and 16th Street Mall since it is situated in the centre of the central business district. The university has 11,000 more online students in addition to those who attend classes on campus. Full-time students make up 76% of the student body, out-of-state students make up 16% of the student body, and international students make up 6% of the student body. Biology, psychology, pre-engineering, music, and economics are the most popular undergraduate majors at the university.

Alumni of the university are employed all over the world since the university enrols students from more than 100 different nations. Many alumni are employed as architects, managers, psychiatric specialists, criminal defence attorneys, teachers, engineers, accountants, and animators, among other professions. Some of the notable alumni are Rick Alden (Owner and CEO of Skullcandy), Janet Bonnema (civil engineer, the first woman allowed to enter a tunnel project in Colorado),  Carlos Samour (Associate Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court) and Deanne Criswell (the first female leader of the Federal Emergency Management Agency).
