Overview

The University of Genoa, also known by the acronym UniGe (Italian: Università di Genova), is a public research university situated in the city of Genoa on the Italian Riviera within the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. Established in 1481, it is one of the largest universities in Italy.

History

In the 13th century, Genoa had Colleges conferring degrees in law, theology, medicine, and arts. The official establishment of the College of Theology occurred in 1471 under a papal bull by Sixtus IV. The Council of the Elders promulgated a Statute for the College of Medicine in 1481. In 1569, a Senate decree incorporated these Colleges into Jesuit-run schools. The current main university premises, designed by Bartolomeo Bianco, began use in 1640. After the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, courses were reorganized into higher and primary education. Genoa’s affiliation with the Imperial University of Paris during the French Empire ended in 1812, and it was reinstated as a separate university. In 1870, technical institutes were established, and absorbed into the Royal University of Genoa in 1936. In the late 20th century, the university expanded with new regional campuses, including one in Savona in 1996.
